James P. Lawrence, MD, MBA Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship Trained in Orthopaedic Spine Surgery
Dr. James Lawrence is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina. He also serves as an professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Physical Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. His areas of focus include minimally invasive spine surgery, cervical and lumbar disc issues and stenosis, complex spinal deformities in adults, spinal trauma, and spinal tumors.
Dr. Lawrence completed his undergraduate studies at Trinity College before earning both medical and business degrees from the University of Connecticut. He then went on to complete his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Yale. Following this, he received advanced training in spine surgery through a fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia. Before joining the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, he practiced academic spine surgery full-time at Albany Medical Center in New York.
He has written many scientific and clinical articles on spine surgery, along with chapters in major spine surgery textbooks. His research has received recognition at both national and international conferences, including those held by the North American Spine Society, Cervical Spine Research Society, Scoliosis Research Society, Eastern Orthopaedic Association, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Throughout his career, he has earned several awards for teaching and patient care.
Currently, Dr. Lawrence’s research focuses on developing new techniques and tools for spinal surgery, studying patient outcomes, and exploring the basic science of the intervertebral disc.
